This is it, friends. My 15th and final year of home educating my kids. After this year, Z will follow in the footsteps of her brother and go to Prep for high school and I'll be retired and maybe start scrapbooking again and making my own cards. Just kidding. I should probably get a job;)
We've had our first day already and have two weeks under our belt. All the extra-curricular activities start back this week so we're bracing ourselves.
We started the day with homemade waffles. This is gonna be a good year now!!
In the past I've decorated our fireplace mantel for back to school but in this house I decided to play up our picture ledge wall.
Without further ado (for those that care) ... here is what we'll be studying this year!!!!
Religion, Doctrine, Biblical Studies:
- Apologetics Study - a once a week study led by Dad
- The Young Peacemaker - nothing wrong with conflict in and of itself - it's how we choose to deal with it
- Shine - for her personal devotions. All the stuff I want to say to her but the author does it in a better way than I could!
- Preparing for Adolescence - because if you're not prepared you'll get eaten alive. You couldn't pay me to go back to my adolescence even for an hour.
- Today's Light Devotional Bible - we read a bit together every night before bed
- Sunday School
Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic:
- Wordly Wise 3000 Vocabulary Book 8
- Fix It Grammar Robin Hood - IEW
- Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) Medieval History Based Writing - taught by me in homeschool co-op
- Literature Class - once a week local homeschoolers class. They'll be studying ancient literature (Greek mythology, Homer, etc)
- Saxon 8/7, Teaching Textbooks Algebra
History and Science:
- Sonlight World History Year 2
- Apologia Physical Science - taught at home, experiments done at homeschool co-op
- Medieval History taught at homeschool co-op (review of last year)
Extracurricular:
- violin lessons
- sewing lessons
- homeschool co-op (dance, music, physical ed, art, other mentioned above)
- basketball (winter)
- track (spring)
It always looks like a lot (which it is) but we don't do everything everyday. My goal is to still have plenty of time to schedule playdates, make member visits that might pop up, time to read, bake, sew, craft, etc.
We mainly school in the room above the garage which we like to refer to as the "multi-purpose room". It's the guest room, a tv/video game room, school room, music room, craft room, my office, game room. I think that's it. It does a lot.

| Naysayers said I shouldn't bring these bookshelves in the move but where I go, my bookshelves go |
| Still loving these IKEA shelves after all these years!! |
My other child (you might remember how I started schooling him first and he was actually my guinea pig) has started his second year of college. Even though he's been going away to school for 6 years, this was the first time he up and drove off all by himself. We usually took him, moved him in, delayed our goodbyes with as many excuses as we could come up with, and drove off without him ... usually as I bawled my eyes out. This was less traumatic as he drove away and I had stuff to get back to. I was also eager to get into his room and bathroom and pretty much disinfect everything I couldn't burn or throw away.
Plus he ticked me off by not being agreeable to take a picture of him in his car leaving.
Let me get this straight. This from the kid that is constantly taking selfies of himself for Snapchat. And he won't let his mother take a lousy picture of this momentous moment in our lives?
Whatever. I still love you, Will.
And while I no longer fill the role of teacher in his life and therefore can't assign him a summer reading list or make him practice his math facts, it's still our responsibility to prepare him for life as best we can. We encouraged him to go to a good school to learn what he needs to pursue his degree but we also want him to be prepared for marriage should the Lord bless him in that way. So this summer he read The Meaning of Marriage by Tim Keller. Highly recommended for singles and married alike!
Happy Back to School to all and blessings on the 2019-2020 school year!!
